| Mechanical terminology: |
|
| Centre of Mass |
The point through which the
line of force of gravity acts. This need not lie within the physical
limits of the body. It is altered by every movement of the body. The
path of the Centre of Mass in flight is pre-determined at take-off.
Only an external force can change the path. No actions of the body in
flight can produce additional or less height or distance. In flight the
body shape can be altered and this will affect the speed of any rotation
about an axis but does not alter the flight path of the Centre of Mass. |
| Velocity |
Speed |
| Force |
A PUSH or PULL. A force is
needed for: starting motion, changing the rate of motion, changing the
directions of motion, or causing motion to stop. |
| Eccentric (off-centre) Force |
A force whose line of action
does not pass through the Centre of Mass of the body on which it acts. |
| Momentum |
The "quantity" of motion (
Velocity x Mass) |
| Linear Momentum |
Momentum in a straight line |
| Angular Momentum |
The "quantity" of rotational
motion (Angular Velocity x Moment of Inertia), i.e. speed of rotation x
resistance to rotation. |
| Moment of Inertia |
The body's resistance to
change in its angular motion (rotation). (Mass x Radiusē) |
| Law of Conservation of
Momentum |
When in flight the total
angular momentum can not be altered. |
| Transfer of Momentum |
Any part of the body can
acquire momentum, whilst in contact with the bed, which can be
transferred to the whole body by a deliberate "blocking" action while in
contact with the bed, or when losing contact with the bed. |
| Newton's First Law of Motion
(Law of Inertia) |
"A body will remain at rest
or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force". Inertia is
the reluctance of a body to change its state of rest or uniform
velocity. Inertia is measured by MASS and is the resistance to movement
or change to movement, i.e. to begin moving, change the rate of movement
or stop movement. The greater the mass, the greater the resistance to
change, therefore the greater the force required to make a change. |
| Newton's Second Law of
Motion |
The rate of change of
velocity is proportional to the applied force, or the acceleration is
directly proportional to the force. |
| Newton's Third Law of Motion |
For every ACTION there is an
equal and opposite REACTION. |

someone does a move, someone repeats that and adds one, etc. |
